The WD 1TB Green Power drives solved the problem for me. But backing it up over a network as my total disk usage grew to hundreds of gigabytes of audio & video files is problematic it can take days and the probability of a crash is high. Pros: To keep noise down, I've always limited my HTPC to 1 hard drive. The trend towards higher data density benefits new 7200 RPM drives as new models are introduced (e.g, 1.5T drives have higher density AND higher RPM yielding even higher data transfer rates). By providing higher data density, WD has equaled the sequential read/write performance of lower density 1T 7200 RPM drives. If a drive has higher density, its seek is not improved but its data transfer rate is faster. If a drive spins faster it can seek faster and transfer data faster.
Overall Review: There are two main issues that influence speed – rotational speed and data density. Since the manufacturer does not report actual rotational speed, we don't know exactly what the speed of the 1T drives is, but it reported to be towards the lower end of the scale. Repeat, they do not spin faster when used heavily and slow down when not. So the 1T drives may spin at a different speed than the 750G may spin at a different speed as the 500G, etc. But the rotational speed CAN vary by model (i.e., capacity) within the GP series. This drive does NOT vary its rotational speed. Pros: I have 4 of these drives and thiink they are great for storing large audio and video files.Ĭons: So much confusion with the 5400-7200 RPM spec.
